Our History

In May 1980, the National Theatre Chinese Dance Company (NTCDC) was formed by National Theatre Trust, upon the successful completion of the dance training programme conducted by prominent Hong Kong instructor, Mr Cheng Shu Jing. The aim of conducting the training programme was to attract and gather talented choreographers and dancers, and promote co-operation and exchange of ideas among local dance organisations, thereby spiraling the artistic growth and standard of Chinese dance locally. The training programme culminated in a concert, "An Evening of Chinese Dances" that was performed on 24th Nov 1979.

NTCDC successfully presented the first concert in 1981. In 1982, they included Indonesian, Malay and Indian dances in its training and gave its second public performance, that year, under the title "Dances of the Orient". That title became synonymous with the troupe's main concert series ever since. In the same year, the troupe formed a Chinese-Western Orchestra to accompany its performances.

The National Theatre Trust was subsequently amalgamated into the National Arts Council on 15th Oct 1991. As a result, all the cultural groups that were formed under the umbrella of the former were disbanded. Members of NTCDC then applied to register a non-profit organisation to continue pursuing the mission and tasks of the troupe. Upon the approval of the registration on 1 Aug 1992, , Theatre Arts Troupe was officially formed.
